The Rise of The Internet

Do you remember a time when the internet was just something you used for really important things, like your job, an important university assignment or sending emails to friends across the world. This was a time when you didn’t find internet in every home, it wasn’t a part of our everyday life and not everybody knew how to use it. Then came the rise of the internet, and websites like Facebook, and Google took over our lives. Now we can’t imagine going a day without checking our Facebook or looking something up on Google.

The internet has changed our lives completely. Everything we need, we have at our fingertips thanks to the Internet. With just one click of a button, you can shop whilst sitting at your home, you can watch any TV show, video and movie from your bedroom, you can even see your friends who live across the world and talk to them like they were in the room with you. The internet is powerful and is only going to continue to grow and improve.

According to Google boss Eric Schmidt the internet will soon be so pervasive in every facet of our lives that it will effectively ‘disappear’ into the background. He said that “There will be so many sensors, so many devices, that you won’t even sense it, it will be all around you.

He further added that “It will be part of your presence all the time. Imagine you walk into a room and… you interacting with all the things in that room.

A highly personalized, highly interactive and very interesting world emerges”, he added.

This raises the question of whether the Internet and the rapid pace of technological advance was killing jobs, to which Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook said “Everyone’s worried about jobs, but tech creates jobs not only in the tech space but outside”.

One of the main topics that the panel at the World Economic Forum at Davos focused on was how the fruits of global growth are being shared across the world. To which Facebook boss Sheryl Sandberg said the following.

She also shared her views on how technology has given a voice to people from every corner of the world and increased connectivity. In her words:

The Value of Word of Mouth

The Internet has changed the way we communicate with not just our friends, family, co-workers and the people we know but also with our favorite brands. Websites like Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn and many more have removed the media filter that once used to exist between the costumer and the brand. Today, the customer is able to speak directly with brands and act as an ambassador for their favorite brands by sharing updates, ads and other details from the brand with their contacts on the internet via email, Facebook, Blogs, Google Plus and other online sharing platforms. Word of mouth has become stronger than ever and cannot be ignored anymore.
