SEO Tips – The Basics of Search Engine Optimisation. SEO – Returning to the tried and tested.

The term Search Engine Optimisation or SEO, has been tracked back to the year 1997.  It was first used to describe a webmaster’s ability to edit a website’s design and code to impact favourably on websites ranking in a search engine.

Since that day SEO tips and basic strategies have included:

  • back-linking,
  • title tags,
  • webpage architecture,
  • site maps and YES,
  • a writing content that placed an emphasis on keywords.

All search engine algorithms are being constantly modified. But user-friendly website development tools are also embracing SEO. Website development platforms such as WordPress or Shopify, now include core elements of SEO.  As such SEO implementation has become less technical and largely automated.

This has impacted on recent search engine algorithm changes and the likes of Google has restructured its view on back-linking in favour of quality content.

SEO tips and basics – Its computer geek speak!

In spite of these changes, the concept of SEO still creates horror chills in the mind of non-technical business folk. People whose view on SEO is that of computer geek speak and complicated.

Google’s current statement on SEO is clear. It focuses on “creating compelling & useful content which will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors.”

So, what has change in pure SEO land?

There are two SEO strategy options.

  1. Web architecture and
  2. Content Marketing.

A good website architecture is a fundamental requirement. It is no longer a nice to have, but a basic must have for your website. Your website strategy should include search engine indexing and responsive website design and display.

With a great website architecture in place, your content marketing is where the continued optimisation takes place.

Generate good content and search engines will reward you with higher search rankings and web searchers looking for your interesting content.

It is no longer about text stuffed with highly targeted keywords resulting in content that does not flow and is difficult to read.

Our 4 basic  but tried and tested SEO tips

1. Use a content management system (CMS)

Your website should have a great content management system (CMS). WordPress offers a simple CMS with many tools options that can assist with SEO and indexing on search engines. Use your CMS to publish your news / blogs. Remember to include great images to bring the written words to life.

2.  The secret to content is… Generate great content and publish often.

At many of my digital marketing seminars, I recommend publishing new content weekly basis.

If all the web pages on your site are exactly the same as when you launched your website, the search engines may no longer be “crawling” your site. Give them something to come back for. Provide them with fresh, interesting and relevant content.

3. Use Google partner sites. Google’s spiders love Google’s partner sites

Did you know that Google crawlers love Google partner sites? So create a YouTube account and embed your videos on your website. Create Google Places pages for your business and classify your business carefully. Think about a Google+ page for your business. And remember to submit your site to Google’s Webmaster tools. Remember to test your website – Is your website Mobile friendly?

4. Social media management. Reach current and potential clients in your social media networks.

Spread your social network. Do you have a social presence on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google+. These tools can offer great links to your website content and aid content distribution. Add to this the affordable search engine marketing. PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns allow you to specifically target audiences with your chosen environment.

Social media and blog writing can also increase your influence within your area of expertise. Not to mention the value as your content gets shared by your fans and followers.
