Many local businesses are using social media promotions and sweepstakes to promote their online brand. A common error being made is running any sort of promotion, competition or sweepstakes on your Facebook page using Facebook’s features and functionality. Examples of this are, please ‘like this update’ or ‘share this photo’ or ‘upload your photo to our page’ or ‘add a comment’ or ‘tell me why you should win this product or service’. In the absence of giving serious consideration to the individual social media site regulations, your promotion could result in your business violating the site’s promotions rules.
Whilst marketing in this forum is one of the simplest ways to generate leads and create a “discussion” about your product or brand, the ultimate consequence of flaunting the rules could be the removal of your account from the social media platform.
You should consider the following aspects:

  • Utilise an application (App) when running a Facebook Promotion.
  • Any contest or sweepstakes must provide promotion participants with terms and conditions of entry.
  • Any promotion should include a disclaimer within your terms and conditions that releases Facebook from any responsibility.
  • The promotion should disclose who the entrant of the sweepstake or competition will be giving their personal information to.
  • A business should refrain from using any Facebook features or functionality as part of the promotion or participation other than liking your page, checking in or connecting to your application.
