Facebook is currently testing a new Facebook feature that lets users “tag” friends or acquaintances with a word and phrase that describes their personality or interests.
The Facebook feature, first spotted by The Verge, is similar to LinkedIn’s capabilities to “tag” users on the site with job-related terms.
Facebook has confirmed that this Facebook feature is currently being tested in New Zealand.
“We’re testing a new Facebook feature called profile tags,” a spokesperson said. “Created by a small team as part of a Facebook hackathon, profile tags are a creative tool that lets you and your friends add tags to your profile to highlight the things that describe you and what you’re into. You can control what tags are shown on your own profile.”
For the small group of New Zealand Facebook users with access to the LinkedIn type tool, a user can visit a friend’s profile page and “tag” them with a word, phrase or even emoji.
Facebook Users, who are notified of the “tag”, are then able to either approve or decline it. As you would expect, approved tags will show up publicly on your personal profile page, and eventually they’ll appear in order of how many Likes they receive by others.
This feature is in test and may never be rolled out to other worldwide Facebook users. The testing of features is common as Facebook tests new features for acceptance and appeal.
